What Is the PADI Advanced Open Water Course?
The PADI Advanced Open Water Diver (AOW) course is a practical diving programme for certified Open Water divers who want to extend their depth limit to 30 metres, build confidence, and experience new types of diving. The course consists of 5 Adventure Dives completed over 2 days — no final exam, no classroom pressure. At Tioman Dive Buddy, a PADI 5 Star IDC on Tioman Island, Malaysia, you'll train in crystal-clear waters with 15–30 metre visibility at some of the best dive sites in Southeast Asia.
Are You Hitting the 18-Metre "Glass Ceiling"?
As an Open Water Diver, your recommended maximum depth is 18 metres. That's fine for many reefs — but on Tioman Island, some of the most spectacular dive sites lie just beyond that limit. Tiger Reef at 18–30m, Tokong Burung at 20–35m, Golden Reef at 20–32m — these are the sites where reef sharks patrol, barracuda school, and hammerheads have been spotted.
The Advanced Open Water course safely expands your depth range and gives you the training to explore these sites with confidence. It's the single most practical upgrade for any recreational diver.
Course Structure: 5 Adventure Dives
The AOW course focuses on learning by diving — not sitting in a classroom. You complete five Adventure Dives under instructor supervision, each introducing a different skill or environment. Two dives are mandatory; the other three are electives you choose based on your interests.
Mandatory Dives
- Deep Adventure Dive — Learn to safely plan and execute dives to a maximum depth of 30 metres. Covers gas management, narcosis awareness, and depth safety procedures.
- Underwater Navigation — Develop compass and natural navigation skills. Improves confidence and orientation underwater — essential for independent diving.
Elective Dives (Choose 3)
Night Diving
Explore the reef after dark — torch techniques, buddy comms, and night navigation at Renggis and Teluk Dalam.
Peak Performance Buoyancy
Fine-tune weighting, trim, and breathing. The most practical skill improvement for any diver.
Drift Diving
Ride ocean currents safely. Essential for Tioman's outer sites like Bahara Rock and Malang Rock.
Fish Identification
Recognise reef fish families and behaviours. Makes every dive more meaningful.
Underwater Photography
Camera settings, composition, and lighting techniques for capturing marine life.
Wreck Diving
Explore sunken structures safely with proper planning and penetration awareness.
Elective availability depends on conditions. At Tioman Dive Buddy, the most popular combination is Night Dive + Buoyancy + Drift.

Pathway to Further Training

Is the Course Difficult?
No. The AOW course is designed to build confidence, not pressure. There is no final exam and no pass-or-fail stress. Each dive is supervised by an instructor, and skills are developed progressively at a pace that suits you.
