Exploring the Depths of the South China Sea: Advanced Diving in Tioman

Updated 2026 • Deep sites, currents & advanced dive planning

Tioman Island sits at the edge of the South China Sea and offers more than beginner-friendly reefs. For experienced divers, deep walls, current-swept pinnacles, and offshore sites provide challenging and rewarding dives.

This guide focuses on advanced diving sites in Tioman suited for divers with proper training, buoyancy control, and current-diving experience.

Experience note: These sites are regularly dived by certified dive professionals operating in Tioman. Advanced Open Water certification or equivalent experience is recommended.

Chebeh Island

Located at the southern tip of Tioman, Chebeh Island is known for steep walls, drift conditions, and deep drop-offs reaching approximately 30 metres.

Strong currents and changing conditions make this site suitable only for experienced divers comfortable with depth and navigation.

Soyak Island

Soyak Island features submerged boulders and open-water exposure. Currents can be strong, with depths extending beyond 30 metres.

Divers may encounter pelagic species such as barracuda, giant trevally, and occasional leopard sharks.

Tiger Reef

Tiger Reef is characterised by underwater pinnacles and walls descending to approximately 35 metres.

The site is known for reef sharks, stingrays, moray eels, and strong water movement, offering an exciting dive for advanced divers.

Labas Island

Located on the eastern side of Tioman, Labas Island offers canyons, swim-throughs, and overhangs that require precise buoyancy control.

Schools of jacks, fusiliers, and groupers are commonly seen, making it a visually rewarding advanced dive site.

Advanced Diving Safety Tips

  • Dive only with reputable operators familiar with local currents
  • Use a dive computer and monitor depth closely
  • Maintain excellent buoyancy and situational awareness
  • Carry surface marker buoys (SMB) for drift dives
  • Plan dives conservatively and respect no-decompression limits
