Pulau Sipadan, located off the east coast of Sabah in Malaysian Borneo, is internationally recognised as one of the top scuba diving destinations in the world.
Famous for its steep drop-offs, strong currents, and dense marine life, Sipadan is best suited for experienced and certified divers seeking big-animal encounters and pristine reef ecosystems.
Important note: Sipadan is a protected marine park. Access is strictly controlled through a limited daily permit system. Divers must dive through approved operators based in Mabul or Semporna.
Marine Life Highlights at Sipadan
Sipadan’s underwater ecosystem is exceptionally rich due to its location along major migratory routes and deep-water currents.
Sea Turtles
Sipadan is one of the best places globally to encounter green and hawksbill sea turtles. Turtles are commonly seen resting on ledges or swimming gracefully along the reef walls.
Barracuda Tornado
One of Sipadan’s most iconic sights is the barracuda tornado — massive schools of barracuda forming swirling formations in open water.
Sharks
Divers may encounter several shark species including whitetip reef sharks, leopard sharks, and occasionally hammerhead sharks in deeper water.
Manta Rays & Pelagics
Large pelagic species such as manta rays may appear near drop-offs, especially during favourable currents.
Macro & Reef Life
Beyond big animals, Sipadan is home to giant clams, colourful nudibranchs, reef fish, jacks, trevallies, and dense schools of fusiliers.
